Connecting customer jobs to growth strategy

ABOUT

Innosight

Innosight is Huron’s strategy and innovation consulting business. Clayton Christensen and Mark W. Johnson co-founded the firm in 2000, and Huron acquired it in 2017. Its work spans growth and innovation strategy, customer insights, and changes to the operating models and decisions needed to put strategy into practice.

Jobs to Be Done is one lens Innosight uses to investigate what customers are trying to accomplish in particular circumstances. Rather than beginning with requests for more product features, the firm describes studying customer choices and unmet needs, then using those insights to shape offerings and decide where to focus. Its innovation work also addresses governance and organizational capabilities, connecting customer insight to how teams make and carry out decisions.

For leaders, Innosight offers an example of applying a customer-jobs lens beyond product design: to choices about services, portfolios, and the work an organization prioritizes. Its client stories illustrate its approach, but are firm-authored accounts rather than independent evaluations of results. Innosight is distinct from the nonprofit Christensen Institute, which was originally named Innosight Institute.
