Microsoft Research
Microsoft’s global research organization
Microsoft Research
Microsoft Research is Microsoft’s research organization, distinct from the company as a whole. Established in 1991, it conducts scientific and technical research through regional labs and mission-focused groups. Its work spans areas including artificial intelligence, computing, health and software engineering. Researchers publish their work and collaborate with academic researchers and Microsoft product teams.
One area of its work examines how software is built and how development affects the people doing it. The Developer Experience Lab, a joint effort involving Microsoft Research, Microsoft and GitHub, studies developer productivity, community and well-being. That work illustrates the organization’s broader scope: alongside research into computing technologies, it investigates the human and organizational settings in which those technologies are used.
