ABOUT

Charley M. Wu

Charley M. Wu is a professor of computational cognitive science at TU Darmstadt and leads its Human and Machine Cognition Lab. He studies how people learn under uncertainty, including how they explore unfamiliar options, generalize from experience and learn from others. His work combines behavioral experiments with computational models of learning and decision-making.

In a 2022 Scientific Reports paper with Eric Schulz, Timothy J. Pleskac and Maarten Speekenbrink, Wu investigated choices in experimental learning tasks with and without time limits. Under time pressure, participants explored uncertain options less, were less guided by expected rewards and repeated earlier choices more often. The results show how urgency can change information-seeking in those tasks; they do not establish what deadlines do to decisions inside organizations.

Wu also co-edited the 2022 volume The Drive for Knowledge: The Science of Human Information Seeking with Irene Cogliati Dezza and Eric Schulz.
