ABOUT

Christian Bird

Christian Bird is a researcher in empirical software engineering. His work examines software development practices and the human factors that shape how developers collaborate. He conducted research at Microsoft Research, where he and Jenna Butler and Thomas Zimmermann studied the use of objectives and key results (OKRs) in a large software organization.

Their study drew on interviews and survey responses to examine goal setting and coordination. Participants reported difficulties working across teams when their defined outcomes differed or priorities lacked clarity. The findings provide a specific example for OutcomesLab’s discussion of alignment debt; they do not establish alignment debt as a measured research construct.
