ABOUT

Edith Ipsmiller

Edith Ipsmiller is an assistant professor at WU Vienna University of Economics and Business. She studies how firms choose international markets, enter them, and decide how much to commit after entry. Her doctoral research examined export-channel choices by small and midsize businesses through real-options, transaction-cost, and game-theory perspectives.

With Keith D. Brouthers and Desislava Dikova, Ipsmiller coauthored a review of empirical real-options research in management. The review examines the idea that firms can defer or stage investments while retaining opportunities to expand or withdraw. It also identifies unanswered questions about when those opportunities produce performance benefits. For an argument about strategic optionality, her work helps distinguish a useful decision-making lens from a guarantee that keeping alternatives open will pay off.
