ABOUT

Raymond Caldwell

Raymond Caldwell is a scholar of organizational change, leadership, and change agency. His published research examines how accounts of organizational change describe the people who initiate it, carry it out, and have the authority to shape it. His journal articles list an affiliation with Birkbeck College, University of London; that publication history does not establish a current appointment.

In a 2003 article, Caldwell proposed four models of change agency—leadership, management, consultancy, and teams—to address the limitations of treating organizational change as the work of a single kind of change agent. His later critique of Peter Senge’s learning organization argues that the idea of distributed leadership leaves important questions unanswered about the practices through which leadership and learning are shared, and about the distribution of power and autonomy at work. The critique concerns how a theory accounts for agency in practice; it is not evidence that collaborative learning cannot work.
