ABOUT

University of Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania, commonly called Penn, is a research university in Philadelphia. Its history traces to a school planned in 1740; Benjamin Franklin helped establish the institution that opened in 1751. Today, Penn brings together liberal arts, sciences, and professional education across four undergraduate and 12 graduate schools.

Penn emphasizes work across disciplines as well as research with practical applications. Its Penn Integrates Knowledge initiative, for example, gives participating professors appointments in two schools. The university includes the Wharton School, which was established in 1881.
