ABOUT

Daniel A. Levinthal

Daniel A. Levinthal is the Reginald H. Jones Professor of Corporate Strategy and a professor of management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. His research examines how organizations learn and adapt, how industries evolve, and how technological change shapes competition.

Levinthal is the author of Evolutionary Processes and Organizational Adaptation: A Mendelian Perspective on Strategic Management (2021). The publisher describes the book as an account of adaptation shaped by organizational initiatives, path dependence, and the selection of promising approaches. With Brian Wu, Levinthal also wrote a conceptual article on resource redeployment. It explains why identifying a potentially better use for a capability can be difficult when its value depends on other activities, organizational decision rights, and the measures used to compare alternatives.
