David J. Teece’s dynamic capabilities research examines how firms coordinate and reconfigure assets as competitive conditions change.
David J. Teece
David J. Teece is an economist and strategy scholar whose work connects innovation, organizational capabilities, and competition. He is a Professor of the Graduate School at the University of California, Berkeley, and a Distinguished Scholar of Strategy and Innovation at the University of South Florida.
With Gary Pisano and Amy Shuen, Teece wrote the 1997 article “Dynamic Capabilities and Strategic Management.” Their framework examines how a firm’s processes, assets, and history shape its ability to compete amid rapid technological change. For an argument about competitive advantage as a system, Teece’s contribution adds a temporal question: can the organization coordinate and reconfigure what it does when opportunities or market conditions change? A coherent configuration of activities may be difficult to imitate yet still lose value if the firm cannot adapt it.
