Edgar H. Schein
Edgar H. Schein (1928–2023) was a social psychologist and professor emeritus at MIT Sloan School of Management. His work offered a way to examine organizational culture beneath its most visible expressions. In Organizational Culture and Leadership, he distinguished artifacts, stated values and underlying assumptions. A values statement, in this account, is evidence of what an organization says—not a complete explanation of how its members behave.
Schein also described how leaders shape culture through recurring decisions: what they notice and measure, where they direct resources, and whom they reward or retain. His writing on humble inquiry emphasized asking questions that make it easier to learn what others know. Together, these ideas give leaders questions to investigate when stated priorities and everyday conduct diverge. They are conceptual tools, not proof that a particular culture-change program will work.
