ABOUT

Lisa D. Ordóñez

Lisa D. Ordóñez is dean of the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego and a professor of management and organizations. Her research includes decision-making, behavioral ethics, and the unintended effects of organizational goals.

In Goals Gone Wild, Ordóñez and her coauthors acknowledge that specific, challenging goals can improve task performance while arguing that poorly managed goals can narrow attention, encourage excessive risk, or undermine ethical behavior. Her work supplies a caution for any proposed strategic-momentum framework: apparent progress against a target needs to be considered alongside outcomes the target does not measure.
